A beautiful sunny day brought together over 300 cattlemen and women from 17 states to Bieber Red Angus Ranch on March 3, 2005 for their 30 th annual production sale. The Bieber's did an outstanding job of presenting the cattle. In addition, approximately 250 cattlemen logged in to view the DV Auction live broadcast. The offering included 200 head of Red Angus, Simmental, South Devon and Black Red Angus bulls and 30 open heifers.
Topping the sale was a Red Angus yearling bull, Lot 17, with outstanding EPD's of -0.4 BW, 39 WW, 69 YW, 20 Milk, 40 TM, 0.28 MAR and 0.07 REA, named Bieber Maximus 9663, a Bieber Make Mimi 7249 son selling for $10,000. Select Sires purchased this phenotypic standout who was also balanced for calving ease, growth and carcass traits. Oates Land & Cattle Company, Big Sandy, Texas, was the successful bidder on Lot 4, Bieber Brando 9886, a Bieber Montoya 8237 son with EPD's of BW 1.3, WW 42, YW 91, Milk 21, TM 42, MAR 0.09 and REA 0.03. Oats Land & Cattle spent $7,500 to get their hands on one of the top young Red Angus prospects for growth, as he ranks in the top 1% of the breed for yearling weight.
Lot 10, Bieber Make Royal 9729, a Bieber Make Mimi 7249 son, with EPD's of BW 1.2, WW 42, YW 71, Milk 23, TM 44, MAR 0.16 and REA 0.06 sold to Tony and Karen Messmer of Messmer Red Angus, Richardton, ND for $6750. Messmer's found a bull that bends the curve for birth weight and maternal traits. Longtime repeat customer Larry Harrison, Harrison Ranch, White River , SD picked up Lot 19, with EPD's of BW -0.6, WW 36, YW 58, Milk 16, TM 34, MAR 0.04 and REA 0.12, Bieber Indigo King 9722 for $6,000. Harrison Ranch bought the Bieber Carcass Hawk 8506 son, who Bieber's think is good enough to replace his sire.
Long time customers, Milton and Peggy Ustad, Beresford, SD, purchased Lot 13, EPD's BW -2.2, WW 34, YW 69, Milk 15, TM 32, MAR 0.10 and REA -0.01, Bieber McPherson 9674, a Buffalo Creek Romeo L081 son for $5,600. This bull is a super calving ease bull that turns the curve on growth and turned many heads on sale day because he looks good on paper and had outstanding phenotype. John and Kathy Vliem, Lemmon , SD , picked up Lot 22, EPD's of BW 1.3, WW 36, YW 75, Milk 18, TM 36, MAR 0.09 and REA 0.25, Bieber Hiatus 9680, for $4,500. Hiatus 9680, a Brown Vacation H7106 son, stands out on carcass traits, positively correlating antagonistic traits of marbling and ribeye. Doug Moyer, Moyer Farms, Buckley, MI found a good bull in Lot 3, Bieber Sierra Tide 9737, a LSF Combination A301M son, with EPD's of BW 2.7, WW 46, YW 84, Milk 20, TM 43, MAR 0.18 and REA 0.10, selling for $4,500. Sierra Tide represents one of the first Combination sons to sell at Bieber's.
Two Bieber Make Mimi 7249 sons brought $4,250 selling to long time customers and friends. Lot 31, with EPD's of BW 0.5, WW 38, YW 73, Milk 23, TM 42, MAR 0.08 and REA 0.14, sold to Hansen Ranch, Faulkton, SD and Lot 90, with EPD's of BW 2.0, WW 42, YW 70, Milk 18, TM 39, MAR 0.04 and REA 0.15, sold to Shady Oaks Farm, Jacobson, MN. Also selling for $4,250, was Lot 11, a Buffalo Creek Romeo L081 son, with EPD's of BW 2.7, WW 47, YW 91, Milk 15, TM 39, MAR 0.10 and REA 0.04, to Hansmeier & Sons, Inc. of Bristol, SD.
Several other bulls sold for $4,000 including: Lot 113 and Lot 76 to Wade and Suzie Tucker, Wood, SD; Lot 12, to Paul Krump, Mantador, ND ; Lot 33, to Namken Red Angus, Lake Norden, SD; and Lot 89, Forest Cattle Co. LLC, Snohomish, WA. The average for 94 yearling Red Angus bulls was $2,980.
Red Angus coming 2-year old bulls were in high demand on sale day. Stanley Gage, Aberdeen , SD purchased Lot 36 for $5,750, a Bieber Make Mimi son, who combines several profitable traits for a total genetic package for $5,750. Lot 35, with EPD's of BW 1.8, WW 36, YW 72, Milk 17, TM 35, MAR 0.17 and REA 0.17, who is a good representation of the summer breeding program at Bieber Red Angus and a Bieber Montoya 8237 son, sold to Namken Red Angus, Lake Norden, SD for $5,500. Lot 63, a Buffalo Creek Romeo L081 son, sold to Darrel Stahl, Huron, SD, for $4,750. Rounding out the top coming 2-year old bulls, was Lot 40, a Bieber Hot Rock 7946 son, selling to Spurr Farms, Houghton , SD for $4,000. The average on 36 2-year old Red Angus bulls was $3,037.
From Bieber's Black Red Angus/Angus yearling bull selection, Lot 146, a Rito 6I6 of 4B20 6807 son, sold to Schaefer's Hat Four Ranch in Wilmot , SD for $3,400. The average for 10 Black Red Angus/Angus yearling bulls was $2,190.
Lot 158 topped the Simmental portion of the sale. This SS Goldmind L42 son sold to Steven Jenson, Lake Preston , SD for $3,200. Lot 156, a BS Mr Corrector 9111J son, sold to Wessel and Sons, Mound City , SD for $3,000. The average for 17 Simmental yearling bulls was 1,958.
Topping the South Devon sale was Lot 180, selling to Dan Belshiem, Ogilvie , MN for $2,600. Lot 179 and Lot 181, each sold for $2,500, selling to Forest Cattle Co. LLC, Snohomish , WA and Larry Dohe, Lincoln , KS , respectively. All three bulls were South Devon/Red Angus hybrids. The average for 9 South Devon bulls was $1,811.
In the Red Angus open heifer portion of the sale several discriminating customers made purchases. Gene Rouse, Huxley , IA purchased the top selling heifer, Lot 205, a Bieber Canyon Gold 8556 daughter, for $2,300. Vulture Acres Reds, Enderlin , ND picked up Lot 197, a Buffalo Creek Romeo L081 daughter, for $1,600. Lot 209 sold to Ryckman Red Angus Ranch, Pollock, SD for $1,550 and Lot 212 sold to Dawn McClanahan, Wood, SD, also for $1550. Fair Acres Stock Farms, Waldorf , MN and Sheldon and Kim Droog, Pollock, SD each bought heifers for $1,500, Lot 207 and Lot 209 respectively. The average for 23 open Red Angus heifers was $1,228.
The Black Red Angus/Angus heifer sale was topped by Lot 224, a B/R New Frontier 095 daughter, selling to Forest Cattle Co. LLC, Snohomish, WA for $950. 7 Black Red Angus/Angus heifers sold for $842.
Three Simmental open heifers sold for an average of $1066, all selling to Evan Sauter, Linton , ND .
Volume buyers were: Ralph Nothern, Kansas; Brian Brocke, SD; Darrell Wangsness, SD; Forest Cattle Co, WA; and DeH Land and Cattle, SD.
In conclusion, the 2005 Bieber Red Angus Ranch production sale was a one of their best sales to date. The success of this sale is attributed to superior genetics produced by this 37 year old Red Angus program and a large base of repeat customers.
